How do Shopify stores automate customer support with AI agents?
The short answer
Shopify stores automate support by connecting an AI agent to their inbox, helpdesk and store data. The agent reads each ticket, drafts a resolution using order history and policy, and executes it after a human approves. Stores replace 10 to 15 hours of manual work per week this way.

A chatbot answers questions. An agent does the work.
Most Shopify stores we meet already have a chat widget. It deflects the easy questions and escalates everything else to a human, which means the hours you actually lose, refunds, exchanges, where-is-my-order with a twist, still land on your team. That gap is what an agent closes.
How the workflow runs, end to end
This is the same structure we build for clients. Nothing here is secret, the value is in running it reliably every day.
Step 1 · Trigger
A ticket lands in Gmail, your helpdesk or reviews. The agent picks it up within minutes.
Step 2 · Context
It pulls the order from Shopify, past conversations, and your return policy.
Step 3 · Draft
It writes the resolution in your tone, including the commercially smart option.
Step 4 · Approval
Anything touching money or a customer waits for your click. Then it sends and logs.
An example run
Say a customer asks for a refund on a €79 order because the fit is off. The agent checks the order, sees the size below is in stock, and drafts a free size exchange plus €8 credit instead of the refund. The owner approves with one click. Revenue kept: €71. Time spent by the team: about four seconds.
What you can build today, and where it breaks
Works with Claude and an hour of setup
- Drafting replies in your tone, from 20 example answers
- A project holding your policy and size charts as knowledge
- A daily 15-minute batch where you paste tickets in and send the drafts out

When you don’t need us
Under roughly 20 tickets a week, on one channel, the DIY setup above is genuinely enough. Run it, keep the 15-minute batch habit, and come back when the volume or the channels grow. We would rather you automate well without us than badly with anyone.
The math behind the numbers
In the stores we see, 10 to 15 hours a week of manual support and admin work is a normal amount for agents to take over. At €100 per specialist hour that is €50,000 to €70,000 a year, which is why a build typically pays for itself within weeks.

Where this breaks
No live order data
Someone is copy-pasting Shopify context all day
No routing
One inbox works but email plus chat plus reviews does not
No approval queue
So either everything or nothing needs a human
Prompt drift
Three teammates prompting three different ways by week three
Will the AI send something wrong to a customer?
Not on its own. Anything that spends money, publishes, or reaches a customer sits in an approval queue until a human clicks yes. The agent drafts, you decide.
Do we have to replace our helpdesk or chat widget?
No. The agent works across the tools you already use, Shopify, Gmail, your helpdesk. If there is no API, we build the bridge.
How is this different from the AI apps in the Shopify app store?
Those are chatbots with your FAQ attached. They deflect questions. An agent resolves tickets, with your order data, your policy, and your approval rules, and it is built around your store instead of a generic template.
Why not just do this ourselves with Claude?
You should start there, the DIY section above tells you how. What you are buying from us is not the model, it is the system around it, routing, tool connections, context, approval loops, plus training so your team runs it in-house.
How long until it runs on our store?
A scan takes a week. A first working agent is usually live within a month, and pays for itself in about five weeks based on the hours it takes over.
